Café Trappisten Westmalle [1ste prijs]

Kernboodschap

Het Café Trappisten viert zijn honderdjarig bestaan in 2023 en is sinds jaar en dag een heel gekende bistro in de streek. Als bijhuis van de Abdij en Brouwerij van Westmalle vind je hier al het lekkers van de Trappisten in een gezellig kader. Post-covid zijn de uitbaters op zoek naar een flexibele uitbreiding om de gasten wat ruimer te kunnen laten tafelen en overdekt het café te laten binnenkomen.

De molenwiek als inspiratie

De opdracht startte voor LAVA architecten met een analyse van het ontwerp van architect van Paul Van Aerschot uit 2008. Het grondplan vormt vier molenwieken, waarbij één vleugel toog en keuken vormen en de overige drie de verbruiksruimtes, elk genoemd naar de drie bieren van Westmalle. Ons ontwerp voorziet een verlenging van elk van deze drie molenwieken met aparte paviljoenen, waarvan er nu twee gerealiseerd worden. In gebruik kunnen deze paviljoenen dienen als uitbreiding op de bestaande ruimtes, functioneren als stand-alone of – via riante schuifdeuren – overdekte buitenruimte aanbieden.

Circulair bouwen

Vooraf stond vast dat we hier een toonbeeld van circulair bouwen van wilden maken. Dit is herkenbaar in het materialenpallet: hout en geanodiseerd aluminium, die overal demonteerbaar verbonden worden. Plafondstralers op lage temperatuur en state-of-the-art warmtepompen zorgen voor de ecologische technologie. In functie van de stand van de zon en de windrichting zorgen uitkragingen voor zonnewering en beschutting.

Reciproke structuur

De blikvanger is ongetwijfeld de structuur zelf: in een zoektocht naar zo weinig mogelijk kolommen - en met de molenwiek als inspiratie - overspannen vier liggers de vrije oppervlakte. De houten balken zijn eigenlijk te kort voor de overspanning, maar door ze op mekaar te laten afdragen lukt dit wel. Ze vormen met andere woorden een reciproke structuur, wat ook een materiaalbesparing inhoudt. In het oculus, waar de vier liggers een vierkant vormen, zorgt een groot daklicht voor royaal daglicht.
De kroonlijst is uitgewerkt met metselwerk in claustraverband, als connectie met de bestaande architectuur en filter voor zonlicht. Hij wordt gedragen door een vierendeelstructuur op welgekozen afstand van het schijnwerk – in functie van de oriëntatie en windrichting.

  • Gebruik van hout Heel de structuur werd opgetrokken uit lariks: kolommen, primaire én secundaire balken zijn opgebouwd uit gelammeleerd hout. Waar er plaatmateriaal in het zicht blijft, zoals op de plafonds onder de luifel en de uitbekleding van de lichtkoepels kozen we voor kruiselings verlijmde 3-ply panelen op een houtskelet. Het interieur tenslotte wordt afgewerkt met ruwe eiken planken.
